GOOD JOB!
Based on our assessment of our Governor’s web site Call to Action last week, we did a good job of engaging our members (and staff). We can congratulate ourselves on our efforts because:
• we managed to drown out the really vicious, negative comments that did emerge – our voices were louder!
• our communication systems between field staff, Region Chairs, Presidents, GPAs, and members got a good work out and overall they worked (where they didn’t, we can shore them up)
• our creativity was apparent in the many ways local presidents convened their members and exercised their voices
• our Political Action Support cadre (IEA organizers and IIE staff) deployed quickly and enthusiastically to do a “systems check” Will our messages impact tomorrow’s Budget message from Governor Quinn? We will see.
For now – thank you! I think we are going to get a lot busier, but this was a good, all hands on deck effort.

RTTT
On Thursday, Illinois, along with 15 other states and the District of Columbia, was named a finalist in the competition for $4 billion to be awarded through the federal Race to the Top program.
Most of the states surviving the initial review of RTTT applications, including Illinois, had applications that had been endorsed by education employees organizations. IEA supported the Illinois application.
IEA President Ken Swanson, Executive Director Audrey Soglin and General Counsel Mitch Roth, provide an update for IEA members and staff on the federal Race to the Top program and explain some of the thinking that preceded the decision to endorse the state application. Watch the video.

E-MAIL YOUR SENATORS TODAY! Remind Senators that the ARRA education funding (“state stabilization fund”) has been very effective in creating/saving jobs and that a continuation of such assistance through an Education Jobs Fund is essential to economic recovery.
Urge the Senate to take immediate action on a jobs package that includes:
- An Education Jobs Fund
- – to save and create hundreds of thousands of education jobs
- An extension of federal Medicaid funding
- – to relieve budget pressures and prevent more cuts to education funding
- Private pension relief
- – to protect retirement security
- Extension of the educator tax deduction
- – to recognize the sacrifices made by educators across the nation who reach into their own pockets to pay for classroom supplies.
