Retired IEA member named interim chancellor at SIUC

Retired professor and administrator Samuel Goldman on Friday was named interim chancellor for Southern Illinois University-Carbondale.

Goldman last week resigned his seat on the university's board of trustees so that he could take the new post. SIU President Glenn Poshard placed chancellor Fernando Trevino on paid administrative leave in March, after only nine months on the job.

Goldman, a member of IEA-Retired, first came to the university in 1980 to serve as dean of the former College of Human Resources. He later joined former SIU President Albert Somit's staff, focusing on regional research and service. He then served as a professor in the Department of Educational Administration and Higher Education in the College of Education and Human Services. He retired from the university in 2003.

Harvey teacher gets international perspective on education unions Lolita Dozier-Caston

No matter how you spent your spring break, Lolita Dozier-Caston probably has you beat.

The president of the Harvey Education Association in March traveled to Bordeaux, France as one of two NEA ambassadors to a national congress of education unions.

The event marked the first time the NEA had been invited to participate in the assembly -- UNSA (Union Nationale des Syndicat Autonomes) Education Congress held March 26-28. The congress brought together more than 400 delegates from education unions across France, as well as about 30 nonvoting guests from Africa, Senegal, Mali, Congo, West Africa, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Spain, Canada, Morocco, Palestine, Israel and the United States.

Although she noticed differences in perspective among the attendees, Dozier-Caston was struck more by the similarities.

"We're all working to make sure that every student has access to quality education," Dozier-Caston said. "We're all dealing with education funding issues and making sure that teachers and other education workers are treated and compensated fairly. We're all fighting against cutbacks and privatization."

IEA members get projects funded through DonorsChoose.org

A total of 117 IEA teachers submitted proposals to DonorsChoose.org in response to the organization's full-funding incentive.

The unique nonprofit Web site offered full funding to the first 100 IEA teachers to submit proposals for classroom projects costing more than $100 but less than $400. Although the special offer ended last Friday, IEA members are encouraged to give the Web site a try, since more than three-fourths of projects costing no more than $400 are funded within three months by individuals browsing the proposals in their quest to directly impact public education.

Congrats to those first 100 teachers who were quick on the draw! And thanks, DonorsChoose.org, for the special incentive!
