Teacher Dan DeLong reinstated
IEA member Dan DeLong is a highly-regarded high school English teacher in southern Illinois, who was suspended last week for giving his sophomore honors English class a scientific article about homosexuality in various animal species.
The suspension drew worldwide attention and the support of more than 3,000 facebook fans. It also drew the attention of his current and former students, many of whom showed up at a meeting Monday night of the Southwestern High School board where DeLong’s fate was to be decided. After more than six hours of discussions, interrupted once for public comment, the key parties emerged.
DeLong apologized for giving the student materials that were not “age appropriate” and thanked his supporters, who cheered raucously when he announced he would be back in class today.
