Batavia High School students use SCORE grant to help needy children

The students of the Developing Opportunities Program at Batavia High School and sponsoring teacher Tanner Seal used a $750 IEA SCORE grant in a community service project to create warm blankets for needy children. The grant funded the purchase of fabric and materials students used to create “no-sew, fleece blankets” for donation. Students selected materials, designed and made blankets as their contribution to the project. The blankets were then donated and distributed to children through the DuPage County Chapter of Project Linus.

“This has been a great experience for our students,” said Seal.  “They were so thoughtful when picking out fabrics and envisioning their blankets. Their creation of the blankets was a totally selfless act.  It was great to see our students caring for others.”

Project Linus is a national, not-for-profit organization with a mission to provide blankets to needy children in hospitals, shelters, social service agencies and other locations. This year marks year five of the IEA’s “Schools and Community Outreach by Educators (SCORE)” cash grants being available to IEA members.
