Illinois Schools May Chip In on Teachers’ Retirement
Even though one-third of Illinois schools have been placed on financial watch lists by the state Board of Education, leading Democrats are moving closer to a plan that would shift some teacher retirement costs from the state to schools.
The new plan — which gained ground after the House Speaker, Michael Madigan, Democrat of Chicago, mentioned it last month in a speech at Elmhurst Colllege — would force school districts and public universities to pay for part of the costs of their retiring teachers. Previously, lawmakers discussing pension troubles had focused on the prospect of reducing benefits for future retirees.
Chicago teachers deliver their union demands
The Chicago Teachers Union submitted a list of demands to the Chicago Public Schools on Friday as they and district administrators embark on what is likely to become months of grueling contract negotiations. Especially divisive issues are on the table this time — class size, loss of professional development days, compensation and what the next school year's 71/2-hour day will look like — and the union released few details about their proposal.
