The
Illinois higher education system consists of nine public universities on 12 campuses, 48 community colleges, 98 independent not-for-profit colleges and universities, and 29 independent for-profit institutions.
Thousands of staff and faculty on the college and university campuses have become part of the IEA-NEA during the last 20 years, but many remain unassisted in bargaining for better working conditions.
IEA represents full-time faculty, part-time faculty, non-tenure track faculty, civil service, clerical support staff and academic professionals on college and university campuses both public and private throughout
Illinois. Their roles and responsibilities vary from position to position and from campus to campus.

Help defeat the community colleges health insurance contribution increase
SB 2595 originally intended to add City Colleges retirees to the community colleges health insurance program administered by the Department of Central Management Services. Amendment 2 increases the contribution rate of every SURS contributor (beginning January 1, 2009) who is a full time employee of a community college district (employee meaning faculty and staff) from .5% to .75%.
Representative Jack Franks has picked up the bill to sponsor it in the House. Please review the
chart of Illinois community colleges matched with all the legislators who represent that area. PLEASE CONTACT ALL HOUSE MEMBERS that represent your community college and tell them to vote against SB 2595.
The IEA Higher Education Council appreciates the feedback from more than 300 members that completed our brief online survey about legislative priorities. An executive summary of the results is now available. For the full report of survey results, please use the form below to contact us. Thank you again for providing this important input.

The struggles in higher education mirror those of PreK-12 IEA members with regard to increasing benefits and salary and having a voice in decisions that impact members.
Higher Education activities within the IEA include both organizing higher education locals and providing support to existing locals and membership. Higher education members include four-year faculty members, two-year faculty members, academic professionals, part-time faculty members, civil service employees and ESP's.
