Looking for an easy way to break down barriers in your school building, ways to urge your students to move beyond their immediate groups of friends and to learn more about others?

Tuesday, Nov. 10 is Mix It Up at Lunch Day, a program sponsored by the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Teaching Tolerance program.

The idea is simple, have students sit with someone new at lunch in an effort to “break down intergroup barriers, reduce prejudice and improve relations in schools,” according to a news release on the event.

Thousands of schools across the country are taking part, including many in Illinois. You can check out the event website and see who is involved, add your school to the list and get ideas on how you can implement other related events inside your school’s doors.

Activities can be planned for throughout the day that are geared toward teaching students the value of getting along with others who are different from themselves.
