The IEA-NEA has established a scholarship program that is open to all children/legal wards of current IEA-NEA members. All children/legal wards of deceased, divorced, or IEA-Retired members are eligible to apply, regardless of child’s age or marital status, as long as they plan to pursue a career in teaching. The Committee is now accepting applications to make awards for the 2012 – 2013 school year.

Please read the application carefully. The Committee will allow previous winners of this award to reapply for the program this year. Previous winners are not guaranteed an award but will be put into the pool with the other applicants.

The Scholarship Committee cannot stress enough that we need your continued funding support in order to make this program a success. Locals and individuals have already made many generous contributions alike. For these donations, the Scholarship Committee is truly grateful. Both the size and the number of awards given depend on your contributions.

All applications, complete with supporting documents, must be postmarked by December 2, 2011 in order to be considered for the 2012 – 2013 school year scholarship program.

Please note that applications and/or supporting documents postmarked after the deadline date will not be eligible for the 2012 – 2013 program. Due to the large number of applications received and the short turn-around time involved for the Committee to come to a decision, all applications must be received in a timely fashion.

Antioch (IL) Community High School special education and global studies teacher Kerri Elliott was honored during the National Education Association’s (NEA) annual Human and Civil Rights Awards dinner in Chicago on Friday, July 1, 2011.

See a video on Elliott’s work and her acceptance speech

Read the July 2010 Advocate story on Elliott’s work.

Elliott received the NEA’s Applegate-Dorros Peace and International Understanding Award, which is given for outstanding contributions toward efforts to foster peace and international understanding and the ability to motivate youth to work toward world peace.

“The need for wider public support for international understanding and a willingness to work for peace has never been greater,” said Dennis Van Roekel, NEA president. “Kerri Elliott has made lasting contributions that will continue to make a difference for years to come.”

While visiting the Kilimahewa village near the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania during the summer of 2008, Elliott learned that local children whose families could not afford to provide a formal education for them were being taught by village elders. The Kilimahewa School initially had been held outdoors in the shade of a roadside tree until a local benefactor donated a small building to shelter the students and their teachers.

Since her initial visit, Elliott has returned to the village each summer with other volunteers for four to six weeks. Their work has enabled the villagers to expand their two-room school into the Kilimahewa Educational Center. Elliott has designed a curriculum, taught students, and provided professional development to the local school staff. Her next project is to use technology to connect her American and Tanzanian students.

In 2009 Elliott started EdPowerment with the goal of creating a clean water system. Initial drilling in 2010 found water near the village, and fundraising to supply running water to the school and the entire community continues.

If you’d like to donate to Elliott’s cause or to learn more about Project Kilimahewa, visit the project’s website.

Cindy Mitchell, Triad School District Silver Creek school custodian and a Region 5 IEA member, received the honor during a January 26 meeting from Max Bochmann, the Chair of the IEA ESP Council and a member of the IEA Board of Directors.

Mrs. Mitchell was nominated for the recognition by Peg McGinness, Chair of IEA Region 5.

“Cindy Mitchell has demonstrated leadership in her local union, in the Triad school district, and at the state and national organization,” McGuinness wrote.

Mrs. Mitchell organized her local and serves as its chief negotiator. According to McGuinness, Triad district employees owe Mitchell a great deal to her for her years of service and advocacy. She was intensely involved in developing community support for the most recent Triad referendum regarding school construction.

According to IEA staff member Marcus Albrecht , who has worked closely with Cindy Mitchell for the past twenty years, Mitchell helped organize many other non-certified local unions in southern Illinois and added that she played a vital role in getting a 2007 Illinois law passed which prohibits subcontracting of public school non-certified employees.

“She met with legislators, served as a spokesperson for the legislation, and helped martial non-certified staff from across the state to contact their local legislators. This legislation is viewed as a model for the entire country,” Albrecht said.

Cindy Mitchell will receive statewide recognition as IEA ESP of the Year at the Illinois Education Association Representative Assembly which will take place March 11–12 in Rosemont, IL.

The Illinois Education Association represents more than 132,000 current and retired education employees including elementary and secondary teachers, higher education faculty and staff, educational support professionals, retired educators and college students preparing to become teachers.

IEA is a state affiliate of the National Education Association.
