Legislative update – October, 2011

Jim Reed, IEA Director of Government Relations, provides an update on the legislative session scheduled to run October 25-27 and November 8-10. Reed reports that, while there are no pension-cutting proposals currently poised to move to a vote in the House or Senate, IEA members should remain attentive and be prepared to act quickly if called upon.

Members are urged to check the IEA website regularly:

  1. Go to My IEA Profile and make sure IEA has the email address on file that will allow you to receive an urgent message in the shortest possible time.
  2. On the website, go to the Pensions page and send a letter to your legislators.
  3. Call your legislator directly by using the We Are One Illinois hotline: 1-888-412-6570 (talking points on the Pensions page)

The whole pension situation is a fiasco and an affront to every teacher in this state. We have no choice but to contribute
to the pension system and now they want to screw us over because they are incompetent. How long do the legislaturers have to work to recieve their pension? I’ll bet it’s not as long as a teacher.
Why would anyone in their right mind want to become a teacher in Illinois?
